MAC MILLER CIRCLES

We began working with Malcolm in 2017. At the time, he was nearing completion on two connected albums — Swimming and Circles.

Throughout 2018, we worked closely with him to develop the visual world for both — a process that continued up until his passing that September.

Circles was completed by his family, producer Jon Brion, and Four Strikes, and released in early 2020. Though most of our work with Malcolm had centered on Swimming, we had already begun sketches and visual concepts for Circles — including the album cover, which was inspired by a Christian Weber photo we had shared with Malcolm early on. He loved the double exposure. We ended up shooting both covers with Christian in two separate, distinctly different productions.

Approaching the video for “Good News,” we believed a tribute wouldn’t be enough. We drew on our time with Malcolm as fully as possible — tried to channel his spirit into the work. Often, it felt like he was the one driving.

Eric directed the visuals alongside longtime collaborator Anthony Gaddis.
